Pouring distilled vinegar into a mason jar filled with lemon peel

Is it easy to make non-toxic homemade vinegar cleaner?

Yes! AND it’s a wonderful way to use food scraps. Have extra lemons? Great! Use those peels for this. I like to plan this when our lemon trees are producing, especially after making fresh lemonade. Essentially you are filling a jar with your squeezed out lemon peel, topping it up with distilled white vinegar and letting this set a couple of days. This lets the essential oils of the lemon peel disperse in the vinegar. You will then pour this via a funnel OVER A STRAINER into your ideally glass spray jar. I got the one in the picture via the Amazon link posted. That’s it - some lemon peel + vinegar into a mason jar then poured into your cleaning bottle. Voila!

Is DIY lemon cleaner effective? YES! It has amazing Germ-Fighting Power

Wondering about the effectiveness of our Lemon Peel Vinegar Cleaning Spray against germs and bacteria? Studies have shown that vinegar is capable of killing a wide array of microbes, including E. coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus aureus. When combined with the natural antibacterial properties of lemon, this homemade cleaner becomes a formidable weapon against household germs. You should know however that it does NOT kill as many germs as commercial chemical based disinfectants. It just honestly, does not.

That said it DOES take care of the big nasties mentioned above of E. coli and Salmonella and that’s pretty impressive. PLUS the fact that you are limiting your exposure to toxic chemicals makes this natural approach to cleaning a big BIG win in my opinion. I feel it’s a great natural cleaner for the day to day and IF - only IF I feel my home has been exposed to some new pathogen carried in on a guest who’s been exposed to illness or what have you then I do keep a commercial product on hand for those kind of situations. Hate to admit it but I do.

Unleashing the Power of Lemon and Vinegar

This homemade cleaning spray is as straightforward as it sounds – it harnesses the cleaning prowess of lemon peel-infused vinegar. The acidic nature of vinegar, coupled with the natural oils and citric acid present in lemon peels, creates a potent degreaser and disinfectant. The result? A non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaner that near rivals its commercial counterparts as mentioned above.

A Safe Alternative to Toxic Cleaners & Plastic Use Reduction

Unlike commercial cleaners laden with harsh chemicals, our DIY Lemon Peel Vinegar Cleaning Spray poses no threat to your health or the environment. Traditional cleaners often contain substances like ammonia, chlorine, and phthalates, which can irritate the skin, lungs, and eyes, and may even contribute to long-term health issues with prolonged exposure. In contrast, the ingredients in homemade vinegar lemon solution are all-natural and safe. Vinegar is known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties, making it effective against a variety of germs and bacteria. Lemon peels, rich in citric acid, not only enhance the cleaning power but also leave behind a refreshing scent.

Besides, it makes you feel peace of mind and is super satisfying to make. You’re using lemon peel that would have gone to land fill which is wonderful. AND that aesthetic jar with the peel and the vinegar makes you feel pretty proud of yourself. It’s just satisfying to make AND easy AND cost effective. ADDITIONALLY you are NOT sending plastic cleaning bottles to the landfill. Grab a glass bottle like I did and fill it up again and again. I LOVE that.

Versatile Applications

This DIY cleaner is incredibly versatile and can be used on a wide range of surfaces, including countertops, sinks, appliances, and even floors. It effectively cuts through grease and grime, leaving surfaces sparkling clean and smelling fresh. Additionally, it's safe for use on stainless steel, glass, ceramic, and other common household materials. DO NOT USE ON NATURAL STONE HOWEVER as it is a mild acid and will dull your natural surfaces.

What NOT to Use it On

While Lemon Peel Vinegar Cleaning Spray is safe for most surfaces, there are a few exceptions. Avoid using it on natural stone surfaces like marble or granite, as the acidity of the vinegar can cause etching over time. Likewise, it's best to steer clear of hardwood floors, as the acidity may damage the finish. Think of this as a degreaser - so a cooktop splattered with oil? Perfect . A bathroom counter with lotion on it? Perfect. A ceramic toilet? Yes again - use it there!

A Healthier Home, Inside and Out

By opting for natural cleaning solutions like our DIY spray, you're not only protecting your family's health but also reducing your environmental footprint. Commercial cleaners contribute to indoor air pollution and can contaminate waterways when washed down the drain. With an eco-friendly alternative, you can rest easy knowing that you're making a positive impact on both your home and the planet. TOTAL WIN.
